The Rules of Liverpool Rummy and how to play Liverpool

Liverpool Rummy (aka Joker Rummy) is a variant of the basic Contract Rummy game. The two games are by and large the same, besides a few changes in the rules. The change in rules happens to be with, the cards dealt for each hand and also the number of deals played in a particular game. The alterations made in terms of rules for this variant of Liverpool Rummy make it distinctive. These changes can be learnt from the sections following.

Liverpool Rummy can be played by 3 to 8 players, all playing as individual players for themselves. Two standard decks of 52 cards with two jokers is used for the game where the jokers are the wild cards. This change can be noticed in Liverpool Rummy which has an increased number of jokers in the deck as compared to Contract Rummy which has got only one. The dealer is chosen by a random draw where each player draws a card and the one with the card with lowest value becomes the dealer. In the game Liverpool Rummy there are a total of 7 deals played.

As told earlier Liverpool Rummy is one of the variant of the hugely popular Contract Rummy. Every deal in the game has a pre-determined contract that is to be fulfilled. An example is shown to the left where deal #2 of Contract Rummy is considered, which has a set (3 cards) and one sequence (4 cards) to be formed to fulfill the contract. Each new deal in a game has a new contract and this keeps the game challenging.

The player in the game is required to form certain melds that can be sets and sequences which in turn make a basic contract. Sets are a group of three or more cards which are all of the same value and of different suits (such as three 4’s, or four 3’s). Sequences are the ones made with four or more consecutive cards, all of the same suit (hearts, clubs, etc). Each contract has a distinct combination of sets and sequences and these contracts change for every deal. The contracts for different deals are shown as follows:

Deal Number of Cards Dealt Basic Contract
Deal 1 7 Two Sets
Deal 2 10 One Set, One Sequence
Deal 3 10 Two Sequences
Deal 4 10 Three Sets
Deal 5 12 Two Sets, One Sequence
Deal 6 12 One Set, Two Sequences
Deal 7 14 Three Sequences

The cards dealt to players changes with the deal that is in the first deal, the dealer deals out seven cards to each player. In the deals of second through fourth the players are dealt with 10 cards and the deals fifth and sixth have the players dealt with 12 cards each. The seventh deal which is the last deal has the players dealt with 14 cards each. Once the dealing for the hands is done, the remaining cards are put face down on the table to form a stock pile, and the top card is turned over and placed face up beside the stock pile to form the discard pile. The player on the dealers left starts the play on picking a card from either of the stock or discard piles. Now the player discards a card face up on to the discard pile and the player to his left takes on the turn. Thus the play continues until a player finishes of the play melding all the cards fulfilling the contract.

Once a contract is formed the player places it on the meld area and lays off the remaining cards in his hand in order to go out to win the game. The player can lay off his cards onto the contracts (melds) made by any of the players and not just his melds. In the play it is important for a player to take a note of the cards being picked and discarded by the other players since this can give him a better understanding of the melds being made by the opponents. Thus can be conscious enough in picking and discarding in order of forming contracts (melds) and also block the other players from forming melds.

Scoring is done once a player goes out. The scores of all the players are computed after every deal and the cumulative scores of all seven deals are summed up at the end giving each player a grand total. When a player goes out to win the game the other players add up the point values of the cards remained in their hand. Each card is worth some points and point values can be seen below in the table. Therefore at the end of the play the player with the least points wins the game. The point values or the worth of each of the cards is given below:

Cards Card Value
2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 face value
J Q K 10 points
Jokers 25 points
